Advancing Veterinary Nursing: Key Insights from the 2024 VETNNET Conference

The 27th VETNNET (Veterinary European Transnational Network for Nursing Education and Training) Conference took place in Kolding, Denmark, from September 18-20, 2024. This year’s theme focused on “Generation Z Veterinary Nurse,” addressing the unique challenges and opportunities in training the next generation of veterinary professionals.

ACOVENE board members Heidi Rasch Johnsen and Nienke Dijkerman attended the conference and shared insights on their experiences. ACOVENE also presented a poster highlighting its mission to elevate veterinary nurse education across Europe.

The conference kicked off on September 18th with a pre-conference visit to Koldinghus, followed by a welcome reception at Comwell Kolding Hotel. The main sessions on September 19th and 20th were held at Hansenberg Organia. The event featured a mix of keynote speeches, workshops, and networking opportunities.

Keynote speakers included Anders Fiil Nybo, who shared his experiences using AI in interactive case studies, and Nina de Franco, who discussed the realities of virtual support in veterinary education. The conference also highlighted innovative teaching methods, such as student-centered lessons in anesthesia equipment and companion animal behavior, and the integration of AI in teaching.

Workshops provided hands-on experiences, allowing participants to engage with new educational tools and techniques. The “Train the Trainer” session and the “Mind Matters Initiative” were particularly well-received, focusing on empowering veterinary nurse students and addressing mental health in the profession.

Social events, including a gala dinner and party at Volkerts, offered ample networking opportunities, fostering connections among educators, managers, and facilitating organizations. The conference concluded with a presentation on the next host, Zone College in the Netherlands, and a final round of workshops.

Overall, the VETNNET Conference 2024 was a dynamic and enriching event, providing valuable insights, and fostering collaboration among people that wants to drive the veterinary nursing profession further.
